Edmonton TELUS World of Science

We chose a Tuesday to go to the Edmonton World of Science as they played IMAX movies on this day and we wanted to see the movie about the Arctic Circle.

We went all in on this one, paying for the IMAX movie and the featured Lego exhibition (The Art of the Brick – currently touring North America) on top of the standard entry fee, so it was not cheap but it was totally worth it.

The World of Science has a lot of hands-on areas for the kids to explore and play. So they had a play in the ‘Garage Area’ first, built a wind turbine and tested it to see how well it worked in a wind tunnel, build and race cars, create a giant marble run, climb a moving rock wall and much more.

We then checked out the Arctic area which was a nice segue before going to ‘The Arctic: Our Last Great Wilderness’ IMAX movie in 3D. This movie followed a National Geographic Photographer as he captured footage of wildlife in the Arctic National Wildlife refuge. This place has no roads (though it is accessible to the public by water or air) and feels untouched by humans. Needless to say, with my new found love of wildlife and taking pictures of them, it made me want to go there.

The ‘Art of The Brick’ exhibition was worth the trip all by itself.

The first part of the exhibition was Lego replicas of famous paintings and sculptures. It was amazing to see these pieces recreated in Lego form. The next part of the exhibition was Lego sculptures of human forms. After this was the Americana area and then it finished up with animals and a T-Rex skeleton, all made of Lego.

The final area of the exhibition was where children could build their own Lego creations. This proved a very popular area for the boys.

I would hate to think how many Lego bricks were used, how much time it took and how much money was spent on Lego pieces to create this exhibition, but it was fantastic.

We also managed to catch the Aurora: Lights of Wonder show in the Zeidler Dome. We got to lie right back and watch the Aurora Lights dance across the ceiling dome, which was spectacular and yes, it made us all want to go and see them in person.

We then headed to the second floor which had a Space area. This was one of the kids’ favourite areas where they could attempt to shoot rockets through hoops. Needless to say, we were there some time.

Finally was the nature area, where there were fossils, microscopes and a couple of residents we would rather not revisit… the tarantula and the corn snake

We spent the entire day at the World of Science and it was a very busy day, but a great day all the same. There was something for everyone and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

Favourite Parts:

Mr 11 – Zeidler Dome – Aurora: Lights of Wonder show

Mr 8 – the rockets

Their mamas: The Arctic circle content – the IMAX movie, the Northern Lights display, and the info about the area. And the Art of the Brick… as longtime Lego builders, the whole family found something to love about it, and it was awesome to see the boys able to identify some of the famous art works!
