Our CanaDream Come True

We had booked a MHX campervan on a Supersaver 6 deal. With this deal, you don’t know what exact model you will get until you pick the vehicle up. As noted in a previous post, we got a brand-new RV with double slide outs and an outdoor kitchen. These RV’s have an interior height of 7’, are between 30-33ft in length, the engine size is 6.8L and the economy was about 3.9Kms per litre. We picked the RV up and it had a full tank of petrol and by how many kms it said we had left, we estimated you could travel appropriately 800kms to the tank.

There were seatbelts for 6 people, which meant the boys had a couch each to sit/sleep on while travelling, although the 4 belts in the back where lap belts. The RV itself handled really well, it had a good turning circle, but obviously due to its size, you had to have a reasonably tight grip on the wheel. It had a reversing camera, with sound so you could not only see the hand signals from your spotter, but also hear any instructions they were giving as well.

You can load your fridge/freezer items straight into the fridge as it remained on while driving and was a full size, which was luxury for us as we only had a small under bench fridge in our last caravan.

If you ever get a chance to drive around Canada a bit you will notice how many RV/5th Wheeler/Caravan (or Trailers) as they call them here there are and they are all huge. I can only imagine because of how easy it is to drive on their long, flat, straight roads that people are comfortable driving or towing such large units.

Once we parked up at the Dinosaur Provincial Park, we got a much better look at the RV. It was simple and only took the touch of a button to get the slide outs in position and even though they only go out about a foot, it was amazing how much extra space was created inside the RV.

The boys loved their beds above the cab and there was a reasonable amount of space between the beds. Mr 11 who is roughly 5ft3 was probably the longest you would want to go on the bed, unless you don’t mind your feet hanging over the end of the bed.

It was really nice to have the table up permanently with enough seating around it to fit four people, this does convert to a double bed, but we didn’t need the extra sleeping space so it stayed up as a table for us to use whenever you wanted. There was a TV above the doorway, but to be honest we didn’t use it as we had limited wifi, especially in the first few days and everyone has their own devices to watch whatever they wanted anyway. There is also a stereo you can connect to via bluetooth.

There is tons of storage in the unit, we didn’t even come close to filling all the spaces. There are a couple of USB charging ports underneath the overhead lockers, but it would have been good to have longer cables as there was nowhere to really sit your mobile or iPad as it charged, other than on the boys’ beds or in an open locker. You can always use the wireless charging point in the kitchen instead if you have the right technology.

The kitchen itself didn’t have a huge amount of work space, but with the additional bench top that flipped up we didn’t really struggle for space. The sink was absolutely massive. Given the height of the RV, it was a bit of a struggle to reach some things in the back of cupboards for some shorter members of the family. There was a 4 burner gas hob which was so easy to start and a convection oven that could also be used as a microwave. This took a bit of getting used to, but you just have allow extra time to cook things than you normally would in a traditional oven.

We had hired a kitchen and linen set which provided everything we needed for our week away, and there was cooking utensils and things supplied as well.

Being able to separate the bathroom and main bedroom from the rest of the RV gave us something we have never really had when caravanning and that was privacy. We would definitely look for something that gave us this option in our next motorhome or caravan.

Having a separate toilet and shower was great, our last caravan had the toilet and shower all in one and having them separate not only gave us more space, but drier feet as well. When I washed my hair for the first time in the RV, the word that came to mind was ‘heaven’. Not only was there good pressure, there was a lot of hot water so I didn’t feel rushed.

The bedroom at the back was fantastic and gave us a place to escape to that we have never had before in a caravan. There were massive amounts of storage here and I could have certainly seen an area where a future TV could have been mounted!!! I did find the mattress firmer than I usually like, but actually got used to it pretty quick.

There was an outdoor kitchen, that included a fridge, TV, sink and a single burner hob. We didn’t use this a lot in the one week we had the RV as we tended to use the oven and a couple of hobs at once in the main kitchen, but the boys did find it a novelty to wash the dishes outside.

It would have been nice to have had a portable BBQ and there was plenty of outdoor locker space for this, but that is a note for next time.

A few other things to note….

When kitchen slide-out was in and you where travelling, you needed to remember to take any cutlery out of the drawer if you wanted to stop and have a cuppa, as you could not access this when the slide-out was in.

The air conditioner and furnace were pretty loud when the air was being blown out, we did discover that you can turn the air blower option off, which was much quieter, especially if you wanted it on overnight.

There were just a couple for areas where the finish wasn’t quite where I thought it should have been for a brand new unit, such as a couple of screws that weren’t screwed all the way in, some of the MDF ends were a bit rough.

The one area that would concern me if I was to purchase an RV like this was the screen door. The plastic handle and slide cover felt a bit flimsy and I would be concerned with the children I have that it wouldn’t take much to break.

Overall thoughts….

This RV was amazing and we did not want to give it back. If we lived in North America, we certainly would want something like this, and it is actually reasonably priced to buy compared to what we would see in NZ. This RV spoilt us and it is going to be a struggle to find anything that even comes close to this luxury on wheels. If you’re heading to Canada, definitely check out Canadream and their deals, as we don’t regret a single moment, or cent, we spent on our Canadream adventure!
